Caring for Water Garden Fish In Your Pond

!: Caring for Water Garden Fish In Your Pond

You have space to spare in your garden. You brainstorm on what you could turn it to. Your final decision - a man-made pond. Instead of having an aquarium inside the house, you opted to have a pond in your garden and fill it up with various kinds of water garden fish.

The most popular pond garden enthusiasts construct is the koi pond. This is a bit different from the water garden because there is a limited amount of plants that you can grow here. But the good thing about having a koi pond is that koi fish is one of the best water garden fish you can actually take care of.

We suggest that the koi pond you construct hold not less than 1000 gallons. The key is the bigger the koi pond, the better. You can even put a waterfall in your pond so that the sound of the rippling water can relax you. This can even delight the koi fish that you have living there.

Plan your koi pond specifically. Always remember that the mistake most gardeners do is that they build a pond that is so small, they end up not using it because there is a limitation on how much plant and fish they can put in it. So if you are building a koi pond, make sure that the area is 3 feet deep. You can even dig 4 to 5 inches to make it deeper.

The great thing about having a pond or a water garden is the variety of plants and fish you can have to fill up the ecosystem. Water gardens adjust moderately depending on the climate. Fish living in the pond will also adjust. As long as you meet the required depth such as 2 feet deep during moderate weather and 12 to 16 inches deeper during colder seasons, then you have nothing to worry about.

Before you begin, choose the proper location to situate your pond for the benefit of the fish. Typically, most ponds are positioned near the home. Choose an area where the pond will be okay all year round. For the fish, you can position it near wildlife. The surrounding birds and butterflies will be beneficial for your fish.

You can position your pond in an area where the run off from rain does not flow towards it. Because if it does, it may bring chemical, fertilizers and organic debris into the pond which will be harmful to your water garden fish.

Leave your pond where it receives four to six hours of sunlight. Fish in the pond reside in water lilies so they have shade anyway. If you are worried about water circulation, using a pump can do all the work for you. You can put water garden systems filter on the waterfall or on the fountain. Fishes in your pond will generally benefit a lot from this kind of pond.

If your fish seem to always be above the water's surface and you wonder whether they are just hungry or you're already paranoid that something is wrong, the answer depends on the kind of fish that you have. Generally, if fish do this, they need oxygen. Observe their mouths. If you see them gasping for air as they are above the surface, then they need oxygen as soon as possible.

If your fish swims above the water surface, then they may just be looking for food. Observe whether there are other fish or mosquitoes which get the food you give them.
Now that we are in the topic of fish, let's move to what you should feed them. If you have a koi fish, then it is suggested that you feed them about 6 to 10 pellets in the morning and in the evening.

It also depends whether you have a large pond. If you do then they have other microcosms for your fish to much on. If that is the case, then you do not have to feed them.

Basic rule is to not overfeed your fish. When you feed your pets, they should come above the water's surface and eat up what you give them in a minute and so. It is advised that you have hungry fish than a fish that is always full.

Another concern is when your fish are always swimming around your pump or your filter. Of course, you will wonder whether they are getting enough oxygen. Observe them closely. If they are not on the water's surface and their mouths are not gasping for air, then they are okay.

The thing about koi fish is that they are playful and they like to hide in different places in your pond. It can be between the water lilies or the water garden filter pump. This only means that you should go to your pet store and shop for a couple of toys for your koi fish.

Fish Pond Pumps - Essentials in Fish Pond Design

!: Fish Pond Pumps - Essentials in Fish Pond Design

Building your own fish pond requires a considerable amount of preparation and planning. There are a number of factors to consider in completing the final design. From rock to soil, from flora to fauna, from the more extravagant to the simplest designs, from the ordinary to the more complex, from the professionally made to the amateur, there is one function an artificial pond cannot afford to do without. A man-made pond most certainly cannot do without fish pond pumps.

Essentially, here are the basic elements of a fully equipped artificial pond; first of all the type of fish or other types of aquatic inhabitants have to be selected. Secondly, the appropriate materials must be chosen to replicate the selected pet's environment, and put into an eye-pleasing design. Thirdly, the size and capacity for water must correlate and allocated to the given area. Lastly, and most importantly, the appropriate filtration and recycling system must be properly installed to ensure the aeration of air, and the cleanliness and sustainability of the water. This is the responsibility of the fish pond pump.

Replicating the natural and ideal environment of the selected aquatic pets is highly dependent on an efficiently working pump. Artificial ponds lack the natural elements of real pond, which warrants the need for these devices, if the man-made pond is ever going to sustain life. The pumps replicate the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between plant life and aquatic animals, accompanied with the appropriate amounts of food, which is vital in the replicated pond, if ever the fish and other organisms are expected to survive.

The pumps are vital essentials, which an artificial fish pond design cannot do without. Without the pumps, the water will not be able to filter waste on its own, and aeration of air will be impossible. Without the fish pond pumps, the fish pond will definitely be unable to sustain life.

Keeping Your Koi Pond Clean

!: Keeping Your Koi Pond Clean

Like dogs and cats, Koi require proper care in order to live a healthy and happy life. Fish are often misunderstood and abused due to the fact that they cannot be as expressive as many of the other pets that we own. However, just like our other pets, koi fish require a clean habitat in order to survive. It is necessary that you take a few simple steps to ensure the best home for your fish as possible.

The most important aspect of koi care is keeping the pond clean. If you feed your koi properly (which means limited amounts on a set schedule) you will only need to clean your pond twice a year outside of emergencies. Standard cleaning schedules for a koi pond are once in the spring and once in the fall. The spring cleaning recovers a pond from the winter season while the fall cleaning prepares a pond for the winter season. Cleaning a pond in the summer is unnecessary unless there is an emergency.

If you are uncertain of whether or not there is an emergency in your pond, there are a few things that you can keep an eye on. Most of all, if your fish are constantly going to the surface of the water, there is likely something wrong with the pond. While it is natural for koi to go to the surface to feed, they should not be constantly agitating the surface of the water. If your fish appear to be putting their mouths above the surface of the water and are not hunting for food, you should immediately perform water tests. Water tests will tell you if there has been a drop in oxygen in the water or a spike of nutrients. Both of these can cause your fish to behave outside of their normal patterns. Another sign to watch out for are fish that are extremely lethargic. While koi are slow and stately fish, they should not be motionless.

Other signs to watch out for include cloudy water, visible scum and heavy blooms of algae in the pond. If you notice these things, you should inquire to your cleaner and find out if a mid-season cleaning is necessary. When you have your pond cleaned in this situation, ensure that the source of the problem has been found and resolved.

Do not over-feed your fish. This can cause your pond to become dirty very quickly. Unlike cats and dogs, koi do not need to be fed daily. Set up a feeding schedule for your fish to best ensure their health. Less frequent feeding will also mean less frequent cleaning. That said, you should never starve your fish. They do need fed every few days to ensure their health.

Caring For Your Fish Pond

!: Caring For Your Fish Pond

Almost everyone is fond of fish either as a meal or as a pet. And more and more homeowners are making fish ponds in their yard and filling it with different kinds of fish. True, fish are not that difficult to take care than a dog or a cat. But they are very critical and neglecting them would sometimes cause death to the fish. Below are tips on how to take care of a fish:

During the winter you do not have to spend more time feeding the fish since they normally do not eat during this season. If you will put fish food in the water it will only pollute the water which can cause sickness to the fish. What you can do is to clean their pond. Remove leaves, twigs or flowers from the water.

If the water in your pond would become an ice and would harden you have to make sure that there is a small opening for the oxygen to come in otherwise the fish in the pond would die. To melt the ice in the pond you can place a medium-size with hot water in it and put it on top of the frozen water of the pond.

For most people spring is the most difficult season of the year for fish ponds because it turns the water thick green. But you do not have to panic about this because there are a number of chemical treatments for this. But this will eventually clear once the weather changes. And remember that algae are good food for some fish so there's no need for you to worry except that it does not look good.

Summer is the best time for most fish. This is the time of the year when they are very active and you, as the owner, should also be very active in taking care of them. Regular inspection to ensure your fish's health is advisable. This is also the time of the year when parasites stick to the fish so better check them regularly. You can check your local pet store or vet's clinic one you notice something unusual with your fish to prevent serious problems.

Right after winter be sure to clean up the filters in your pond and ensure that they are working properly. If your pump is broken or needs to be fixed do not throw it away instead check your local store or go online and search for a replacement and have it fixed or DIY, this way you get to save money.
